John William Gable
July 20 1930 - December 5 2020
After a 10 year struggle with Parkinson's Disease, John passed away peacefully in his sleep, in his 91st year at Serenity Retirement Home in Barrie, Ontario.
John was predeceased by his parents Katherine( née Johnson) and Alvin Gable, his sister Mary Woodcock, brother Frank Gable and ex-wife Margaret (née McDonald). He was Father of Deborah O'Dwyer ((Michael (deceased)) and Richard Gable.
John was born in Uxbridge Ontario and attended schools in and around Newmarket and Mount Albert, Ontario finishing at Newmarket High.
In 1957 John was one of 4 to form the first Lettercarrier service in Newmarket, Ontario. He retired from the Post Office in 1988 having risen to Supervisor. John was never one to remain idle and filled his early retirement years with work as bartender at the Hayloft, and started his own property maintenance business.
In younger years John enjoyed sports on the local pond with his children from shinny hockey and touch football in the vacant lot next to his Cedar Valley home. Whatever the season, he loved to harness Queenie & take anyone who was interested for a sulky or cutter ride. John was a Jack-of-all-trades and was always ready to help out family or friends. He helped shingle and rewire his Son-in-law Michael's island cottage as well as helped friends cut trees, fix tractors cars, appliances, etc.
In later years after moving to Woodville Ontario, John developed a passion for Euchre and could always be relied on as a fourth.
John remained independent at the Royal Oak Senior's Apartment in Mount Albert, until February of 2020 when his advancing Parkinson's Disease necessitated relocation to Lakeside Retirement Home in Alcona and finally in September to Serenity Retirement Home , Barrie where he received exemplary and compassionate care.
As per his request and in compliance with Covid restrictions, there will be no service or celebration of life. If you do wish to acknowledge John's life, a donation in his name to The Parkinson's Society would be appreciated.
