Olwen (Margaret) Alksnis nee Roberts
July 1, 1928 – October 24, 2019
Passed away with family by her side at the IOOF Home in Barrie, Ontario on October 24th, 2019, following a lengthy illness of dementia. Olwen (nee Roberts) of Stroud and Gilford, born in Liverpool, England was in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her husband Verners. Loving mother of Christine (Scott) Rettie, John (Carolyn) Alksnis; loving Nana to her two cherished granddaughters Catherine and Amy Alksnis; and Step-Nana to Christopher and Ian Rettie, and Sara Milne. Dear sister to her many siblings Ena, John, Lil, Albert, Les, and Audrey; and aunt to Barry (Linda) Gaynor. Predeceased by her beloved parents Catherine and John Roberts. Olwen overcame challenges in her life with wit and humour, and yet lived humbly with a strength that she found in her passion for St. Peter’s Church and volunteering. She was admired by her family and friends for coming through bombings of the war as a child, starting a new life in Canada away from her siblings, and for her long courageous struggle with her health.
A most heartfelt and special thanks to the nursing and care staff at the IOOF Home in Barrie, as well as Caring for Seniors, for their compassionate care and love. They looked after Olwen like she was truly family.
As per Olwen’s wishes, her remains will be cremated, and a service, prior to her interment at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Churchill, will be held on Thursday, October 31st, 2019, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to IOOF Home, Kempenfelt Court, Barrie or to St. Peter’s Churchill.
